Systems Of Wealth Podcast #10 | Brian Veeder

In the tenth episode of the Systems Of Wealth Podcast I am joined by my friend, Brian Veeder.

Brian is the Operations Coordinator at Kahuna Business Group, Inc. In the previous episode of the podcast, I had the opportunity to sit down with his business partner, Frank Lunn, (if you haven't listened to the episode with Frank yet I highly recommend) and together they form an incredible duo.

This was a really fun conversation because Brian and I both are ops guys at our core. We enjoy being part of the day-to-day of executing tasks, mobilizing resources and making sure objectives are being met. For me personally, I have had a hard time finding information or locating people specifically around that type of work. In simple terms, I think it's because the type of person who enjoys operations isn't usually somebody who is going to be super vocal so this was special for me to give the spotlight to somebody I really admire and hopefully this can be valuable to anybody who aligns with us as well.

We also go deep into something I have been trying to flesh out in my mind recently. As a baseball player growing up and more specifically being a pitcher, I have been reflecting on the lessons I learned as an athlete. I loved being a pitcher because it allowed me to be in complete control of the momentum of a game. Nothing moved without me. It also meant that I needed to be reliable, consistent and make sure that my coaches and teammates felt like they could trust me in high pressure situations.

As a pitcher, you have to want the ball in your hand at all times. Lead by example, not let your emotions get too high or too low and essentially do the basics. Throw strikes, field your position, control the run game, etc...I wasn't going to be somebody who blew you away with my fastball, but over the course of the game I kept things close and gave my offense a chance to always be within striking distance.

It's interesting because I think without really realizing it, I've built my business and have found positions on teams very much around those core concepts. As an ops guy, I am very much in control of the flow of projects. Things move through me and I have a very clear view of the "field of play." I want to make sure my clients feel like they can always rely on me in crunch time and that I am going to step up when the game is on the line. I am always looking for a way to empower others on my team to be in the best position possible to focus on their superpowers. That is my sweet spot.

To all my builders, I salute you!
